As my 2013 fitness season comes to an end tomorrow, I’d like to share with you some of the things I loved about this year in chronological order!
Olympic Lift Certification – In January, I attended a 2 day Olympic Lift certification in Ottawa through the Ontario Weightlifting Association. It was a blast and I felt a lot more confident in my lifting and teaching abilities after the course.
CrossFit Birthday – I was invited to my friend Sarah’s daughters’, Kassidy birthday which was at CrossFit. I was among 8 year olds – and it was really fun to see how interested in exercise kids really are (I witness this all the time in my own bootcamp classes – kids LOVE exercising!)
PaleoFX in Austin – This was the highlight of my year. I had the best time in Austin, Texas. I got to meet so many bloggers that I follow that have since become dear friends. I volunteered at this event, and they assigned me as speaker support for Sarah Fragoso from EverydayPaleo. Sarah is ultimately the reason I came to know about Paleo and I am a huge fan.
Whole Foods opening in Markham – Finally! A Whole Foods that is a bit closer than Oakville or downtown Toronto. If you have never heard of Whole Foods, it is basically like a gigantic grocery/health food store. I believe all of their produce is organic and they sell better quality meat products than most grocery stores. If you ever go there, try the blueberry maple sausages! And a matcha latte made with almond milk.
Intro to Weightlifting – This was a program I created right after my Olympic Lift cert – I knew some clients who were interested in incorporating some big lifts into their training. Definitely fun to teach!
Fat Loss Bootcamp – I created a program for people who needed help with nutrition and exercise with an emphasis on accountability. I also made this program available online! This by far- has been my favorite program..
Online Gym Program Design – After many requests for me to write programs for people to do at the gym, I made it official.
Born Primal Podcast – My friend Kendall Kendrick from Primal Balance started her very own podcast, and I was lucky enough to be a guest on her show with another fella I met at PaleoFX. We talked about how we incorporate the Paleo lifestyle with our clients in a gym/fitness setting.
Chickens – One of the things I preach is quality food and knowing where your food comes from. What better way to know what you are eating than to have that food being produced in your own backyard. Watching these chickens mature to produce eggs has been such a rewarding experience for me – and its not hard – anyone can do this.
Gardening – I planed another vegetable garden this year. Some things were successful, others were not. I seem to really love zucchini, radishes and cucumbers the most. Will be reassessing what things to plant for next summer.
Ancestral Health Symposium Atlanta – You know you are getting old when you ask for tickets to a conference for your birthday. And a special thanks to my good friend Sarah, for hooking me up with her travel benefits. AHS was a 3 day event of presentations, hanging out with Paleo Friends and eating some great food. Some of the memorable presentations include: The Consuming Instict: What Juicy Burgers, Ferraris, Pornography and Gift Giving Reveal about Human Nature by Gad Saad, Ph.D., Why Women Need Fat: Three Evolutionary Puzzles by Will Lassek, M.D., a panel on Surival, among many others.
Trader Joes opening in Tonawanda – Some of my favorite bloggers have talked about this grocery store and I didn’t even know what it was. But one was opening in Tonawanda, NY and I had to go check it out. (What kind of person drives 4 hours for a grocery store? Ally & Sarah: girls who wants there freakin’ grassfed butter!)
And that concludes my list of some of my favorite things that I have done this year! I have already started planning the events I would like to attend in 2014 and I look forward to sharing that information as it becomes set in stone.
I would like to thank all of my wonderful clients for allowing me to be a part of your life. I was leaving a clients house the other day and I was thinking about how people hire me to help them, but often times, these people end up being a huge influence in MY life.
Have a great holiday and look forward to seeing you in 2014!
